Hurry up! You’ve got a little over 2 hours — that’s until 6pm — to get out there and shop Indagare Magazine and Shop L-Atitude’s holiday Souk today! The exotic travel magazine and style traveler’s shopping site moved its annual holiday Souk to downtown this year, hosted at Madeline Weinrib’s Flatiron area showroom on Fifth Avenue, and the expansive layout of the shopping field was, as promised, a “marketplace of global finds.” I partook of this stand-out shopping experience last night and felt that if I listened closely enough, I would hear the trilling ululation of shopping elation bouncing from shopper to shopper.
Former photojournalist Liz Gilbert’s Kenya Shompole Collection was a beauty, her pieces goldsmithed in African and beaded by Maasai tribe members, with her business creating commerce and employment for the people of that village.
Matonyok is another business bringing sustainable employment to the Maasai women throughout Kenya. Bags and tassels of Italian leather, often in a metallic sheen, were adorned with Maasai beading. I think I may have to go back today to get one of the tassels; it’s perfect for a clutch of mine that lost its own during NYFW.
Leslie Tcheyan’s L’Artigiano collection was a stunning array of talismanic proportion, incorporating “feathers” of bone or metal, arrowheads, orthoceras sea fossils, locks and beaded tassels.
Shop L-Atitude’s chief creative officer Kym Canter gave us a run down of the treasures on her rack and table — the colorful caftans being some of our faves.
It was such a pleasure speaking with Laura Lobdell and learning how she created her sea-soaked knotted silk wrap bracelets and her signature patented rings modeled after metal Champagne tops (the part that holds down the cork!).
