Barista Giovanni mans the espresso bar at the minute new coffee shop “I Am Coffee,” snuggled in between the exteriors of two buildings on St. Marks.
The three-month old adorable – albeit skinny – shop is made to look as though the space is still outdoors.
Hot water pipes hold up shelves, exterior brick morphs into interior walls, with one rounded wall encased with coffee sack cloth, and a cat looks down from an “upstairs balcony.”
The entire shop closes off with one huge wooden-framed sliding glass door that opens up to a mirror and wrought iron bar. You’ll get to know your neighbors quickly, as there’s not much room to squeeze beyond two deep at the approximately 15-foot bar. Recos? Try the house specialty, the Shakerato, a creamy non-dairy cafe served chilled and shaken, but not melted over ice. It’s a big taste for such a tiny place.
