It’s A Wrap! The Main Trend at NYFW:M Autumn Winter 2016

It’s all about that wrap, as this past week’s menswear designers showing at New York Fashion Week: Men’s proved.

It seemed like NYFW:M’s saw a poncho, cloak, serape, mantelet, shawl or long, long, wide scarf draped ever-so-correctly around one’s shoulders at almost every collection. There was even a super model’s super hero cape, as in the case of the extended, destroyed Hero Hoodie the inimitable Tyson Beckford rocked front and center at designer Greg Lauren’s Autumn/Winter 2016 presentation at ArtBeam Studio Wednesday night.

Here, a Fashion Whirled recap.

Menswear Goes Wild!
NYMD Kicks Off NYFW:M’s Fall 2016

Menswear stood it’s ground at yesterday’s kick-off day of shows at Industria for the fifth season of New York Men’s Day presentations.

The collections were a wild and wooly bunch, including Cowboy Cool at Krammer & Stout (below, top). There was a distinct point of view from most of the designers showing. Great Pacific Northwest attitude, with tears and all, at CWST (middle) and jazzy tailored coolness at David Hart (bottom).

More in-depth coverage throughout the week. Stay tuned!

New York Menswear Week Starts NOW! NYMD A/W 2016 Kicks Off

New York Men’s Day (NYMD) kicks off the Autumn/Winter 2016 NYFW:M’s shows today at downtown’s Industria Superstudio. Krammer & Stoudt, Max ‘N Chester, PLAC, GARCIAVELEZ, David Hart and Edmund Ooi present in the morning. HVRMINN, Robert James, Lucio Castro, Matiere, CWST and Chapter show during the afternoon session at the Superstudio. Meanwhile, a a number of other designers and brands will be showing around the city, from the DiMenna Center to  various venues before NYFW:M’s rolls out in full force at the Skylight Clarkson Studios on Washington tomorrow.

Designers Garciavelez, Edmund Ooi and “left coast menswear” CWST already debuted at least part of their collections at last week’s trade shows. Some of the things Fashion Whirled’s contributing editor Mary Ellen Barone loved at Liberty and Capsule included Miansai’s new rope cuff links, the new modern fitted dress shirts from Daniel Bernardo’s Glass House Shirtmakers and the graphic street wear of designer Jon Koon’s Haculla collection inspired by Harif Guzman’s 15 years of street art.

Come back and visit later and often for news and reviews from this week’s menswear shows and presentations. We’ll hit up some great menswear street scene style, too. Look out Nick Wooster; we’re comin’ for ya!

Menswear: Heading into 6 Years of MWN!

The MensWearNetwork celebrated the new year, the new January menswear market week, an influx of new faces/new perspectives/new ideas and views, as well as 5 years of putting together a mix of industry generations and expertise. Can’t believe we are heading into our sixth year of networking new and knowledgable, start-ups and venerated industry stalwarts, old school with new kids in the class.

Catching up with our menswear friends at last night’s MensWearNetwork event at The Lambs Club meant lots of talk surrounding the current state of the industry, which trade show was the fave of the week (MRket and Liberty Fairs were on everyone’s lips), new designers and new collection and product approaches.

Fun meeting newcomers to our group – like retailer Gary R. Drinkwater of Cambridge, Mass’s Drinkwater’s and hearing his tales of selling that stalwart Northeastern community. There were the founders of Little West Twelfth accessories (launching for fall) and the White Space Group (Dearrick Knupp, Ashley John Heather and Greg Lagola), speaking of their interactive menswear plans. The women’s and menswear designer Michael Kaye, of his eponymous Cravate collection, showed his accessories line in print and spoke of reaching out to the UK market. Shirt designer Lucky Nahum told the story of how he named the signature design detail he’s using in his Vluxe shirt collection. Sustainable-based Glass House Shirtmakers designer/owner Daniel Bernardo talked about his move back to New York, Bushwick, in particular, and his search for a retail venue on the LES.

Thank you to all who journeyed out last night (and Tom Julian – you were greatly missed!). Holly, Mary Ellen, John and I look forward to seeing everyone again in April!

Let the Fall Shopping BEGIN! Workin’ on
the Love Gang, the cool new EV boutique

Yep. This happened.

Love Gang East Village

Not that I bought both of them, mind you. But the one at the top definitely found it’s way to my closet. Crafted from vintage leather motorcycle jackets, designed by Matiere de Reflexion, carried at the East 9th Street fashion shop, Love Gang NYC.

I LOVE the Love Gang,  the space initially devoted to Devorado, owner Carmen Ruiz’s former vintage style maven haven. Carmen, with shop partner Cara Bloch, ensures that Love Gang fashions and accessories here are cool and contemporary, with affordable prices. I went for a pair of Les Specs sunglasses, initially; then a tiny mouse top knuckle ring that had to be part of my ring repertoire. Added bonus at the shop? Luella, Cara’s adorable  Frenchie, who helps holds down the fort and functions as fashion guard dog and four-legged shop gal.

Make a date with the Love Gang. You will fall fast and hard.Love Gang East Village
