NYFW:Men’s Day Two

NYFWM Spring 2016New York Fashion Week: Men’s is off to a rousing start. And the new “tents,” the runway, presentation and hub space at the Skylight Clarkson Space,  550 Washington, is absolutely amazing, with multiple platform areas for tableaux presentations, intimate runway “rooms” and booth areas outside in the main relaxing/gathering space lounge. Yesterday, we visited Shinola’s design director Richard Lambertson, he of the leather goods guru duo Lambertson Truex (John Truex was busy speaking to other press while we were there)  at the Detroit heritage label’s booth. The totes, gym bags, wallets and watches were enticingly displayed. And we were ecstatic to learn that women’s is on its way.

Shows we saw and loved from Day Two, besides the leather goods from Shinola? Nick Graham, Duckie Brown and the tech-y coolness of EFM (Engineered For Motion) by Donrad Duncan.

Nick Graham’s Everywhere tableaux presentation at Mik Studio, where his “work globally, shop locally” theme was front and center – as each model was tagged, per Nick, with an “interchangeable” international city, from New York to Athens to Hong Kong, Toronto and beyond – focused on his post-prep tailoring and fun, colorful, playful sportswear. It’s Modern Menswear at its most contemporary best.

The Duckie Brown design duo of Daniel Silver and Steven Cox never fail to push the fashion envelope for guys and pants are where they mail the newness home. Voluminous, paper bagged at waists, dragging on the floor above graffiti painted leather boots from Eastland, their newest shoe collaboration, and topped with sheer organza. These were sportswear looks not for the fashion faint-hearted. The wrap top and the neon yellow oversized suit had an Asian sensibility to them. I couldn’t help but think of kimonos and  David Bowie, for some reason.

EFM by Donrad Duncan was a technical coup of ultra functionable fabrics like the  waterproof camouflage shadowed blazer, the packable rain coat and a midnight-hued skinny tailored soft suit. Gabrielle Union and basketballer Dwayne Wade were part of the impressed onlookers, pictured with the designer, below.
