Candela SS13

To paraphrase Rick Nelson, I went to a garden party…there was magic in the air.
Strapless pleated lace dress with rose gold gladiator tie-ups

From Federico Fellini’s quote on the run of show, “No matter what happens, always keep your childhood innocence…” to Candela designer Gabriela Perezutti cooing to

her twin girls, “Look what Mommy made,” as she scooted them around her romantic offerings, that garden party magic created a synergistic energy in the long romantic dresses, Victorian blouses and embellished skirts at the Candela presentation in The Box at Lincoln Center yesterday.

The designer taking her twin girls to see “what mommy made”!

The designer’s Uruguayan roots resulted in folk art embroidery on a gauze tunic, tiers of lace, ruffles and sequins on gowns and long skirts, poppy printed sundresses and lace shorts, all paired with, as Perezutti pointed out, an unexpected shoe, one of the backbones of this collection. Perezutti told editors the collection was about “falling in love.”
We agree. We absolutely have fallen in love…with Candela!

Mara Hoffman SS13

We we serenaded by a trio of ukelele-playing beach babes, then taken to a happy Hawaiian state of
mind at Mara Hoffman for Spring/Summer 2013.

The designer, interviewed backstage after her runway show, said her inspiration was an “Aloha spirit!” And to wit, there was a mix of Hawaiian prints + color, which Ms. Hoffman said was “a natural place for me this season.” Her favorite print? The medicine wheel “with the herbs represent healing…”

My favs were the modern, updated caftans, flowy, loose and long. The ultimate in “Happiness is a Bright Summer Dress” attitude.

There were lots of other options, too: board shorts, belly-baring bandeaux and bustiers, sexy side slit
skirts and retro cut swimsuits. Long, flowing chiffon, crepe de chine in cheerful hues of poppy +
magenta + coral, turquoise + sky with hints of vanilla, sand and black.

Aloha, to all!

Nicholas K: Fashion Week SS13

The eccentric wind of a bedouin gypsy dressed for urban travel wafted through Nicholas K’s collection at the kick off of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at the Lincoln Center Thursday morning.  Layers, drapes, scarf prints and a desert-hued palette of neutrals and Sedona reds flowed throughout the men’s and women’s wear that the designer sent down the runway. Chambray and indigo were a highlight (I call chambray as the newest trend of the season!). Cool details like a laptop backpack pocket on the back of guys’ hoodies were reminiscent of early Daniel Poole and Marithe et Girbaud….

Getting a Scents of Fashion Week

A mere week before New York Fashion Week kicks into gear (offsite shows start today, with MBFW’s Lincoln Center tents’ venue runway-ready tomorrow), Elements Showcase, last week’s scent trade show held Monday and Tuesday on 10th Avenue, felt more like a gallery crawl, as essential oils, candles and soaps affected a decidely artistic, even artisanal attitude. An elegant venue, the showcase highlighted exhibitors for press and buyers in what turned out to be a very serene, low key staging.
Wild crafting was the term du jour, as exhibitors spoke of essential oils, plant life and foraging. Even the skin care product line Liftlab Skin Regeneration focused on nature and plants, touting the scientific discovery of animal and plant life ability to protect themselves from a harsh environment with a secret protein that the company is pioneering as a way to combat “progressive aging.” Yes, please, sign me up!

Belle Fleur‘s new classic floral scented soaps, above, and its latest, the beautiful regal rose candle collection, below.
The requisite barbershop. Seems like every trade show recently has been offering straight edge shaves. Why is it the guys always luck out?!

Boadicea the Victorious‘ alluring bottle is finished with British pewter engraved with Celtic knot work.

Andrea Maack created a wall of her artwork, cut into perfume test strips, which were then sprayed with the viewer’s favorite scent or combo’d layering. Each was signed and numbered.

Cire Trudon‘s gorgeous atomizer lent Old World charm.
One of Joya‘s beautiful special edition scents; they also create slip-cast porcelain for perfume oil, candles and soap trays.
21 drops‘ portable aromatherapy addressed insomnia, digestive issues and cravings, all in a cute building block packaging.

Alan Cumming Luvs VLOV S/S 2012

The Good Wife’s Alan Cumming, front row with his green socks and signature black round eyeglass frames, watches intently as models file by wearing VLOV by Qingqing Wu.
Wu said he was inspired by the letter V, for its “graphic and graceful simplicity.” This came through in the VLOV silhouettes, incorporating laser-cutting techniques and high-tech finishes for wools and linens and embossed fabrics.
Unusual details, like half belts on DB jackets worn with shorts, as well as asymmetric or partial zips on blazers and flap treatments on coats, were some of the design highlights.

Endless Summer at a Lonely Beach

Sandy Hook was deserted near our spot at the (bayside) beach last Saturday.

Makes you empathize with all those kids going back to school today. I almost am experiencing that b-t-s jittery anxiety and fear myself, something one of my friends pointed out to me this morning.
Oh. No! That’s not it.
It’s only Mercedes Benz Fashion Week anticipation! Which throws its own kind of back-to-school shade, when you think of it.
See you at Lincoln Center soon….
